FUTURE YOU WILL ASK ME WHY. ๐Ÿ˜ญ

I was running.

Not like when teacher says "don't run in corridor", but like my feet didn't belong to me anymore, like they were pulling me forward without asking.
My breath was coming out fast and funny, and my chest felt tight, but I didn't stop because my heart was jumping inside me like it was celebrating something.

I was smiling while running.

I was calling him again and again, because now I can.

"Baba"

Yes.

I have baba now.

Dashing chachu always said that one day my baba will come.

Whenever he said that, I laughed and shook my head and told him I don't need baba because I already have him.
Then he would smile in that soft way of his, bend down to my height, and kiss my forehead like he always does when I say something silly.
But that night he was different.

That night he hugged me longer.

That night his smile was small.

That night he said he is going for important work and will come back before night, and then he said something else;very slowly, very carefully.

He said if someone comes to me, then that will definitely be my baba.

I didn't understand everything, but I nodded because his eyes looked shiny and serious, and when grown-ups look like that, it means something important.

And when I saw that man sitting on my bed maybe sleeping I knew.

My prayers worked.

My friend Ganesha listened to me.

I talk to him every day before sleeping.

I tell him about school, about ice cream, about how Tuffy eats my slippers, about how I want a family like my friends.

Now I have one.

He calls me little princess.
I know I am not little, but when he says that, something warm happens inside me, like when blanket is warm in winter.

Now I can also tell my school friends that I have baba too, just like them, and my chest feels big when I think about it.

And I have brothers.

Kabir bhaiyu talks to me slowly, like I am something precious.

He smiles with his eyes and calls me sunshine, and sunshine means the sun who shines, and even if I am not orange like the sun, he feels happy calling me that, so I love it.

Monster uncle is still monster uncle because he spoiled my ice cream, but his hair is nice and shiny, and one day I will forgive him......maybe.

Giant uncle is very tall and never smiles, and I think maybe his heart hurts somewhere, so I want to make him smile one day.

And scary uncle I don't like him. He stares too much. He scares Tuffy.

I don't like anyone who scares my baby.

I suddenly remembered I was still running.

Tuffy was behind me, his small nails making tick-tick sounds on the floor, and he barked once, a happy bark, because he runs when I run.
I told him to come fast, and he wagged his tail like he understood everything.

Then I saw everyone standing together.

Baba
Kabir bhaiyu.
Monster uncle.
Giant uncle.
Scary uncle.
And some other uncles I don't know.

They all turned at the same time.

And then I saw it.

My feet stopped by themselves.
Like the floor suddenly became sticky.

My smile fell from my face without asking me.

Dashing chachu was lying there.

There was a white blanket on him.

I couldn't see his body, but I could see his face.

He looked like he was sleeping.....but different. Too still. Too quiet.

Tuffy stopped too.

He tilted his head and sniffed the air, then made a small sound from his throat, not a bark, not a growl something sad.

My heart jumped inside me, but I didn't understand why.

Baba started walking toward me, but I ran from the other side.

"Dashing chachuuu!" I shouted happily, because look;he kept his promise. He said he will come before night.

Before I could reach him, baba caught me and lifted me in his arms.

I wriggled.

"Baba, leave me, dashing chachu is here....see, he came"

I pushed his chest with my hands, trying to get down.

"Baba, please, let me go.... he promised me"

Baba didn't say anything.
Not even my name.

That scared me a little.

I turned my face and called again.

"Dashing chachu, wake up na ,I am here"

No answer.

I tried again, louder this time, my voice shaking.

"Dashing chachuuu... I came back"

Still nothing.

My eyes started burning, and water came out without asking me.

Tuffy jumped near baba's leg and barked softly, his tail wagging like he was confused and asking why no one is responding.

I stretched my hand toward dashing chachu.

"He is sleeping right?" I asked softly, not looking at anyone.

Kabir bhaiyu came closer, his eyes shiny in a way I don't like.

"Sunshine" he said gently, "maybe he is very tired. He will wake up."

I shook my head hard.

"No he promised me. Yesterday night he promised me. He said he will sleep with me and sing Chandaniya."

My voice broke, and hiccups came.

"Make him wake up na, bhaiyu.... please"

Baba held me tighter, wiping my face again and again, but my tears didn't stop.

"Princess," he said slowly, "baba wants to tell you something. Will you listen to me?"

I thought for a moment.

Baba never lies.

I nodded.

He said, "Let's sit first."

I looked at dashing chachu again.

Tuffy suddenly pulled away and ran toward the blanket.

He sniffed it, sat down, and then made a small crying sound that made my chest hurt badly.

"Tuffy" I whispered.

Baba sat on the sofa and made me sit on his lap.

He called for water and made me drink while wiping my face carefully, like I will break.

I held Tuffy's ears tightly.

Everyone was watching me.

Kabir bhaiyu looked broken.

Monster uncle wasn't angry.

Giant uncle wasn't cold.

Scary uncle wasn't scary.

They all looked sad.

Very sad.

I didn't understand why.

Dashing chachu is here.

He kept his promise.

Then why does my stomach hurt?

Why is baba silent?

Why does the room feel heavy?

I hid my face in baba's chest and whispered in a very small voice,

"Baba when will dashing chachu wake up?"

Baba's arms tightened around me.

No one answered.

Tuffy whimpered softly.

And for the first time in my life
I felt scared of silence.

Baba held me tighter, like if he loosened his arms even a little, I might float away somewhere he couldn't reach.

His chest felt warm, but his heartbeat was fast, thump-thump-thump, like it was scared too.

"Princess," Baba asked softly, brushing his thumb over my hair, "do you know what heaven is?"

I nodded immediately, because this was easy.
"Yes, Baba. Heaven is Bhagwan ji's house. Dashing chachu told me."

Baba's eyes flickered, just for a second, like something hurt him from inside.

"And," I added proudly, because I remembered very well, "Dashing chachu also said that when my friend Ganesha needs help, he calls people to heaven. Like a big meeting."

Baba swallowed. His face changed, not angry, not smilingโ€”just broken.

"That's very right, princess," he said slowly. "Your dashing chachu explained it very well."

I smiled a little at that.

Then Baba continued, his voice gentle, like he was scared of scaring me.

"You know , your friend Ganesha has been very tired lately. He has too much work. Too many people to take care of."

My smile disappeared.

"Tired?" I asked, my lips trembling. "Why is Ganesha tired? Did someone make him sad?"

Baba nodded.
"Yes. And when Ganesha becomes tired, he asks for help."

I suddenly felt bad. Very bad.

I should have asked Ganesha earlier. He is my friend. Friends ask.

"So," Baba went on, "he asked your dashing chachu to come to his houseโ€”heaven and help him."

Confusion jumped inside my head.

"But Baba," I said slowly, pointing with my finger, "dashing chachu is here. He is sleeping there."

I could see him. He was right there. White bed. White sheet. He looked peaceful. Like he was just taking a nap after playing with me too much.

Baba wdidn't look where I pointed.

"Baby," he said quietly, "he is not sleeping."

I frowned hard.
"But he is. He didn't even remove his watch."

Baba closed his eyes for a moment, then opened them again.

"When God wants someone to help Him," Baba explained carefully, "He lets that person sleep forever. That sleep is very deep. So deep that they don't wake up and they don't talk and they don't listen."

Something hot slipped out of my eyes before I could stop it.

One tear.

Then another.

"But Baba," I whispered, my voice shaking badly now, "I don't sleep without dashing chachu."

Baba's arms tightened.

"He sings for me," I cried. "He sings Chandaniya every night. He makes me wear good clothes. He gives me ice-cream even when kaki says no."

My tears fell faster.

"He cooks for me. He goes to school with me. He plays with me. We do party together. Every Monday we do kirtan and pray to Shivji, Baba."

I looked up at him desperately.

"Tell him na.... don't go. I can't live without him."

Baba wiped my cheeks again and again, but tears kept coming like they didn't want to listen.

"Okay," Baba said softly, even though his voice was breaking too. "I'll call your friend Ganesha. I'll tell him not to take your dashing chachu."

Hope flickered inside me.

But then Baba added gently, "But princess, if Ganesha doesn't get help, he will stay sad."

That hurt even more.

I sobbed loudly now.

"I want both," I cried. "I want my dashing chachu and my Ganesha. I don't want anyone sad."

Baba kissed my forehead.

"Let's do one thing," he said after a pause. "For now, we will send your dashing chachu to help your friend. And once the work is done we will call him back."

I thought very hard. My head hurt.

If I said yes, Ganesha wouldn't be sad.
If I said no, dashing chachu would stay.

I sniffed.

"Send him fast," I whispered finally. "Because I can't sleep without him."

Baba nodded and wiped my tears again.

"Okay. Now you sleep. I'll sing Chandaniya."

I hesitated.
"Baba can I meet dashing chachu once? Please?"

I made my puppy face. The one that always worked.

Baba looked toward a scary uncle standing nearby.

"Is it safe?" Baba asked him.

I didn't understand. Safe from what? Dashing chachu never hurt me.

The scary uncleโ€”he had a serious face, like he scolds people for fun looked at me.
For the first time, he didn't glare.

"It's not safe to touch," he said gently. "Her body is small. Germs can be dangerous."

Then he added, "I'll bring gloves. She can wear them."

I still didn't understand. But if gloves meant I could meet dashing chachu

I nodded quickly.

Behind me, I heard soft sounds.

Kabir bhaiyu was standing with his fists clenched, his eyes red, looking away like boys do when they don't want to cry.

Giant uncle was frozen, not blinking at all.

Monster uncle held Vikram's hand tightly, like if he let go, everything would fall apart.

Scary uncle sat on the sofa, head down, shaking silently.

Tuffy whimpered near my feet, his nose pressed against my leg, like he knew something was wrong but couldn't fix it.

I hugged Tuffy too.

"Don't worry," I whispered to him. "We'll bring dashing chachu back. Baba promised."

But somewhere deep inside my chest
something felt like it had already gone very far away.

And no one knew how to bring it back.

Baba's arms felt like a wall around me, strong but shaking, as if even he was scared of what would happen if he let go.

His shirt smelled like medicine and something bitter, the kind smell that lives in hospitals or people who is in hospital. I didn't like that smell. It always meant people spoke softly and nobody laughed properly.

Like a toy breaking that you can't fix.

And for the first time in my life

I felt scared of sleeping.
